An Inconvenient Truth is a documentary about Al Gore giving a slide show presentation to people around the world about climate change and global warming. It was directed by Davis Guggenheim and released in May 2006.
The film has 2 central themes, the science behind global warming as shown in the presentation and things from Al Gore's personal life that he uses to explain why he is doing this presentation around the world and why it is important for people to take action. He talks about the devastating effect smoking had on his sister who died of lung cancer, and compares that to global warming, asking how you could let that happen to something you love so much. He also compares global warming to when his son was hit by a car, and how scary it is to almost lose something you love.
During the scientific portions of the film he uses graphs and statistics to show CO2 levels. He explained the process of using Antarctic ice cores to measure Carbon dioxide levels hundreds of thousands of years back, and these studies showed CO2 levels are higher now than in the past 650,000 years.
One of my favourite parts of the film that seems useful for my project is a graph of the CO2 emissions (above), and then it slowly takes a coloured slice away and labels it according to the action. Each of the actions only reduces it a bit but it builds up until emissions are much lower, so it shows that through combined actions not just doing one thing and leaving it at that, C02 emissions can be reduced. I think this would be a really useful message for the video.
There are some useful facts and figures, and also some ideas that I can take away from this film. The science of global warming, and how we can prevent it are explored enough in this film for me to build my own ideas on. At the end of the film it lists a lot of things that people can do to help, and it might be useful to make note of these so I can use them.
