Pitch

We held a session where we had to pitch our ideas to the class. This was helpful for a number of reasons, most importantly for me was to clearly establish what I was going to do. The project is called handmade, and I was unsure just what that meant. The idea is for the elements to look handmade and not digitally produced. I will give the impression of my pitch here which included a description of how my ideas were formed and what they are inspired by.

Development:
I have been developing my ideas in my sketchbook with drawings, thumbnails and storyboards. This is inspired by my research, primarily in to abstract film makers from 1940s/50s America. I have been looking closely at the work of Norman McLaren. His works are very simple yet pleasing aesthetically compared to other experimental film makers from the period. His work is more playful, as the films are not so erratic and have interaction between elements.

My favourite piece by McLaren is 'Dots'. The movement of the dots is quite rhythmic and builds up over time. It has a distinct handmade look, because the dots were painted on to the film and it shows that they are blobs of paint. The background is flat colour which contrasts the paint blobs. I have also looked at Len Lye and Harry Smith who made much more frantic, textured and arguably more abstract films.

Idea:
My idea is to use the key elements I have identified in these abstract experimental films. I do not want to directly copy scenes from their work but instead to produce parts of my sequence in their style.
