I am going to be looking at various packages for cereal in order to recognise packaging design conventions. I will also be analysing the various elements that make the design to determine the different messages being communicated and why it is successful. All this will help me in designing a similar package design. Here is a checklist style criteria for what I must look at when analysing the packages.
Information
Brand – What is the product brand?
Name – What is the product name?
Materials – What material is the packaging made from?
Measurements – What are the box dimensions?
Design
Graphics – What graphics are there?
Logo – Is there a specially designed logo?
Information – Is there information being conveyed on the packaging?
Typography – How is text used?
Marketing – What marketing messages or techniques appear?
Audience – What audience is the packaging and product aimed at?
Promotion – Is there any promotion on the cover for other products or prizes?

Images - What graphics are there and what are they of?
Colour – What colours are used in the graphics?
Layout – How are the graphics arranged?
Effects – What do these elements communicate to the user about the product?
Colour
Main colours – What are the most used colours?
Types – What types of colours are used? (e.g. gradients, solid colours)
Effect – What effect do these have on the design and the consumer?
Swatch – Make a swatch of the 5 main colours in the design.
Typography
Font Faces – What fonts have been used?
Colours – What colours are the fonts and how many?
Weights – What weights of fonts are there and how many?
Styles – What styles have been applied to the text?
Layout – How are the different pieces of text arranged in the design?
Effect – What effect does this have on the user?
